Tonle Sap Lake in the Lower Mekong Basin
The Tonle Sap Lake (known also
as the Great Lake), located in central Cambodia, is the
largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia and an important
component in the Mekong River system. The area is globally
unique and the lake has an extraordinary hydrological system.
During the wet season, the Tonle Sap River changes its
direction to flow into the Tonle Sap Lake instead of from the
lake, due to heavy flooding of the Mekong River.
